CAROLS AND THE FIRST WALKS OF 2009
Churches Together's annual Christmas
service on the Market Hill took place on
December 20, a bright if cold Saturday
morning. There were carols and readings
with a short address by the United Reformed
Church minister, the Rev Jenny Mills.
Singing was led by the Baptist Church music
group. Some 70 people attended the service
at the earlier time of 11am
On New Year's day there was the traditional
walk around the town churches. Starting at
St Luke's the group of walkers grew steadily,
eventually reaching some 50 people.
The visit to St Bede's was followed by those
to the Baptist Church, the Parish Church,
the Methodist Church and, finally, the United
Reformed Church where hot drinks and
biscuits were served.
More energetic hikers from the churches
went on a circular six miles walk on
Saturday morning, January 3, starting and
finishing at the Three Locks, south of Stoke
Hammond.
HELP NEEDED WITH LENT LUNCHES
One of the features of the early part of the
year in Newport Pagnell, is the Lent Lunches
held at the United Reformed Church. The
meals are served in the URC Hall, all profits
going to Christian Aid.
All churches in the town are being asked to
support the venture from February 27 to
April 3 this year. Other members of the
community will also be welcomed as
helpers. Duties during each session
(11.30am to 1.45pm) will include setting up
and laying tables, stirring soup, serving at
tables, washing up and tidying the hall. Even
help on one of the six Fridays will be
appreciated.
For more details, and to make offers of help
or donations of home-made soup, phone
Jennifer Mazzone on 613088
CELEBRATION OF MARRIAGE
To celebrate the end of National Marriage
Week (February 7-14) churches in the
Newport Deanery are inviting people to a
"Celebration of Marriage" at St Peter and
St Paul's Church, Newport Pagnell, on
Valentine's Day, Saturday, February 14, at
2pm.
It will be a service in which couples can
renew their commitment to each other and
celebrate special anniversaries. It will also
include some favourite wedding hymns and
readings. Among the congregation will be
couples who are to be married during the
coming year. After the service there will be
refreshments, including a wedding cake!
Since the Church's rules about weddings
were changed last October many more
couples are now able to marry in a church of
their choice. This has brought about an
increase in church weddings generally and
specifically in the churches within the
Newport Deanery.
The Rev Beverley Hollins, Deanery
Development Facilitator for the Newport
Deanery, says: "A church wedding is a
beautiful and personal expression of a
couple's hopes for their marriage. We offer a
warm welcome to all couples interested in a
wedding in one of our churches and are
delighted to be celebrating marriage at our
special event on Valentine's Day."
The Newport Deanery includes the Anglican
churches of Newport Pagnell, Lathbury,
Moulsoe, Sherington, Chicheley, Astwood,
North Crawley, Olney, Haversham, Little
Linford, Tyringham, Emberton, Hanslope.
Castlethorpe, Stoke Goldington, Gayhurst,
Ravenstone, Weston Underwood, Lavendon,
Cold Brayfield, Newton Blossomville and
Clifton Reynes.
For further information please contact the
Rev Beverley Hollins on 01908 614943.

Outstanding celebrations
O
n returning to school for the start of the spring term, staff at
North Crawley CE School discovered a letter from Ofsted on the
doormat! The team were delighted to have received correspondence
from Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of schools, Christine Gilbert,
congratulating
everyone on
their
outstanding
Ofsted
achievement.
Not only is
North Crawley
CE School
included in the
list of
`outstanding

published on
the Ofsted web
site, but they
have been
awarded a special certificate and logo to celebrate their `outstanding'
achievement. Christine Gilbert wrote, "One of my most enjoyable
annual duties as Her Majesty's Chief Inspector is to publish a list of
providers that were judged to be outstanding when they were
inspected. Please accept my warmest congratulations on achieving
this very high standard of practice." K
