Border Crossing
by Pat Barker
Tom Seymour, a child psychologist living in the North
of England, is a specialist who is called as an expert
witness from time to time when a young person has
been accused of a serious crime. He and his wife are
walking along by the side of a river when he sees a
young man swallow a mouthful of pills before making
a headlong dive and being swept away by the current.
Tom immediately dives in after him, eventually
locating him in the freezing cold water and dragging
him to the bank through thick, treacherous mud. He
and his wife apply artificial respiration, and eventually
feel a pulse before the arrival of the ambulance which
Lauren, Tom's wife, has summoned.
When Tom visits the young man in hospital he
discovers that, by a strange coincidence, he had been
instrumental in sending him to prison, as a ten year
old child. Danny for that is his name - has now
served his sentence, been given a new identity and is
attempting to be integrated into society once more.
He is finding it very difficult, and so Tom suggests that
he might come and talk from time to time nothing
formal, just a chat. It is that impulsive offer of help
which causes Tom to breach the boundaries set to
protect practitioner and patient the reason why the
novel is called `Border Crossing'.
The reader follows Tom on his exploration of what
happened to Danny in the thirteen intervening years
between that moment in the court room when Tom's
evidence helped to convict the ten year old and their
second meeting. It raises many questions, showing
Danny as a complex and multi-faceted character, one
whom several people have tried to help. It also
addresses the thorny question of whether a child so
young should be incarcerated; shut away from the
world, whatever the crime of which he has been
convicted.
The author tackles her subject with skill and
confidence, writing an inspiring, challenging novel. It
is well worth reading!

Oxfam Bookfest Olney!
Programme of Events
Oxfam loves books and to prove it, we're
launching Bookfest, here, in Olney. Bookfest
will be bursting onto the Olney book scene
with a bang. Starting on 3rd July and
running for a page-turning, world-changing,
book-loving fortnight of celebrations.
Bookfest is Oxfam's national book festival
a fortnight packed with book events in
Oxfam shops all over the country,
celebrating all that the charity does with
books. The event in 2009 was a huge
success -- with over 350 events, a 40% rise
in book donations and hundreds of
thousands of pounds of poverty-busting
sales across the country. This year Oxfam
are adding even more events, and selling
even more books to make even more money
to fund our work.
The Olney Book and Music shop will be
joining in the festivities with its own
programme of events throughout the
fortnight. Our theme this year is `Children',
with events focused on books for, and about,
children, and Oxfam's work with children.
We will be hosting book signings and
readings by local authors, story times for
younger children, book quizzes and
competitions. As well as offering a fantastic
range of children's books at very good
prices.
Saturday 3rd July
Bookfest kicks off with special displays for
Bookfest and the World Cup. Come in and
see our new expanded children's books
section with probably the largest offering of
children's books in the area. We have
books for all children, from under 5s right
up to teen fiction books such as books
(sometimes!) in the Twilight series.
Wednesday 7th July
10.30am Storytime in the shop for under 5s.
One of our volunteers, Gill, will be reading
from specially selected books in the shop's
children's section. All children taking part
will go away with a free book!
Saturday 10th July
10.30am Storytime in the shop for 5-7 year-
olds. Gill will be reading stories, again, but
this time to slightly older children. All
children taking part will go away with a free
book!
11.00am Fourteen year-old poet Catherine
Turvey visits the shop to sign her new book
`The Voice Within', and to take part in a
question and answer session. Catherine's
book of poetry will be released on 1st June,
a book, which, in her own words, "give
people hope, encouragement and comfort".
Come along and be inspired! All ticket
holders will be entered into a draw to win a
signed copy of her book!
12.30pm See the World Cup being
presented in the shop! Everybody who buys
a football book during the world cup will be
entered into a draw to win The World Cup
on the eve of the real one being presented!
Wednesday 14th July
10.30am Storytime in the shop for under 5s.
The last storytime of the festival. All children
taking part will go away with a free book!
Saturday 17th July
10.30am Children's author and illustrator
Nicholas Halliday will be in the shop to do
book readings and sign copies of his
acclaimed books, `The Lonely Tree', and `The
Scummage', with readings at 11.00am and
1.30pm. The Observer wrote about The Lonely
Tree: "Compelling! This book has something
very special about it." While Stephen Fry said:
"Utterly, completely and splendidly charming.
Originally illustrated and delightfully told". All
ticket holders will be entered into a draw to
win a signed copy of one of Nicholas's books!
Throughout the fortnight: Children's
competitions to design a bookmark, to
design a cover for your favourite book, and a
book quiz for children, with prizes of books
for each age group. Full details of these are
available in the shop.
Tickets for Storytimes on 7th, 10th and 14th
July are free and available from the shop in
advance but there is limited availability and
will be on a first come first served basis.
Tickets will also be available for the
Catherine Turvey and Nicholas Halliday
events; these are also free and simply enable
a preferential sitting/standing position in the
shop. Again, there is limited availability and
tickets will be issued on a first come first
served basis in advance from the shop.
The Olney Oxfam Book and Music shop is
located between the Market Place and the
Co-Op in Olney.
